The Little Treehouse Story
My daughter, Hana was born in 2006. Being a new parent meant a lot of things changed. Two of those changes are directly responsible for the birth of Little Treehouse.
Firstly: I’ve become quite the “environmentally responsible consumer”. Obviously I’m a firm believer in the precautionary principle where Hana is concerned – no nasty chemicals please! And, I feel a responsibility to help protect our planet so she can enjoy it as I do.
Secondly: where did all my time go? It is too precious a commodity to waste it looking for parking, standing in lines, trying to find somebody to answer my questions etc. I want to spend my time with Hana. Shopping has to change!
Of course educating myself, and sourcing alternatives is pretty time consuming, so the new me has been quite conflicted.
I was sure I’d found the solution when I turned to online shopping. I could do all my research while Hana was napping and make my purchases without leaving home.
Problem solved I thought, but then:
- Inadequate product information (Organic they say, but is it certified? Certified by whom? Does it fit big or small? – I had lots of questions and the websites I found weren’t answering them).
- Beige, beige, everywhere beige. Ok people remember back when all recycled paper was that speckled colour that signified “recycled”? We moved past that…ooh look, coloured recycled paper. But organic textiles seem to be stuck in that same rut. I really don’t mind beige mattresses, but clothing and toys? Lack of colour choice is a big deal to me, kids clothes should be bright and cheerful, not the tones of shredded wheat.
- And how come you have to fill your shopping basket, create your account, choose a “unique” password and checkout before you can find out that, “Unfortunately we don’t ship to Canada”? Or there is huge shipping and customs & duties.
I decided to start Little Treehouse. In the short term probably not the best decision I could make in terms of freeing up my time. But it does feel like the right thing to do.
My goal is to provide parents with high quality organic textiles, lots of information about who produced it and how, detailed product descriptions and size ranges, upfront shipping information, and of course fun and funky colours and designs when appropriate.
I still haven’t done everything I want to do with Little Treehouse - again the lack of time is the critical factor here, but I’m working on it. Please send me your ideas about how I can help parents on the go make some important choices for their little ones.
